What a proof-of-reserves report leaves unanswered

Read the scope, date, liabilities and assurance level before treating a reserve number as a solvency guarantee.

At a glance

Proof of reserves can provide evidence about specified assets or customer inclusion at a particular time. Its value depends on scope and method; it is not automatically a complete financial-statement audit, proof of all liabilities or a guarantee of future withdrawals.

A reserve ratio is a starting point for questions, not a complete description of an institution. Before interpreting the percentage, identify exactly which assets, liabilities, entities and moment it measures.

Read the title less, the scope more

The SEC's investor bulletin on alternatives to financial-statement audits warns that limited reports may not provide the scope and assurance of a full audit. Its crypto-asset risk alert also discusses the limits of reserve snapshots. These are US investor-education sources, not a legal conclusion about a particular exchange or country.

A ratio with a missing denominator

Imagine a fictional report shows 120 units of assets against 100 units of included customer balances. The reported ratio is 120/100 = 120%. Now suppose a separate hypothetical obligation of 30 units was outside that scope. Comparing the same assets with 130 total units gives 120/130 ≈ 92.3%.

The example does not allege omitted liabilities at any exchange. It demonstrates why coverage of the denominator matters. Neither ratio alone establishes asset ownership, legal priority or the speed at which assets can be converted to meet withdrawals.

Five questions to annotate

QuestionWhy it changes interpretation
Which entity and accounts?A brand can include multiple legal entities
Which date and assets?A snapshot is not continuous monitoring
Which liabilities?Customer balances may not be the full set
Which method and reviewer?Procedures and assurance levels differ
What limitations are stated?Exclusions define what was not tested

If a customer-inclusion check is offered, completing it may support inclusion in that dataset. It does not, by itself, answer every question about the rest of the business. Read the actual report rather than substituting a promotional badge.

Keep the conclusion proportional

Write “the report covers these balances on this date” when that is what the evidence supports. Do not upgrade it to “funds are completely safe.” Conversely, absence of one report is not proof of insolvency. Record unavailable information as unavailable.

Use the same discipline when comparing platforms: our exchange checklist treats access, costs and operational checks as separate dimensions. A favorable reserve figure does not settle them all.
